Law Enforcement School-Based Programs

COMBAT funds school-based education programs for nine different law enforcement agencies in Jackson County.

Many of these programs are based on the DARE (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) curriculum, which consists of 10 lessons that encourage students to participating in group projects, role-playing, pair discussions, games and more. Each lesson is designed to promote interaction among the students, as well as between the students and their teacher. Most of the police departments have customized their DARE programs to meet their students' specific needs. Some have paired DARE with GREAT (Gang Resistance Education And Training).

Blue Springs DARE

Collaborative efforts among law Enforcement, Education and Prevention Science have distinguished the D.A.R.E program. D.A.R.E.'s keepin' it REAL Elementary Curriculum this commitment to provide cutting-edge instruction that prevents drug use by developing basic or core skills needed for safe and responsible choices. These skills extend beyond drugs to health and mature choices in life. Developing core academic and life skills, the curriculum furthers both educational and prevention goals. Blue Springs DARE officers present extra lessons on dealing with suicide issues, teaching additional coping skills along with identifying a trusted adult and how to ask for help. DARE officers have been additionally trained to recognize at risk youth.

Buckner DARE

The DARE curriculum consists of 10 lessons designed to be taught in 40-45 minute segments. The lessons include a variety of teaching modalities aimed at encouraging student participation such as group work, role-plays, pair discussion, and games. The lessons are designed to promote interaction among the students as well as between the students the teacher, and local law enforcement so that the students are involved in their own learning.

Grain Valley DARE

The Law Enforcement School-Based Program of the Grain Valley Police Department consists of three full-time School Resource Officers who work in schools throughout each school year. The School Resource Officers are available to school staff and students on a daily basis to provide law enforcement services as well as assisting in counseling, mentoring, teaching and maintaining daily interaction and engagement with staff and students.

Grandview DARE/GREAT

The DARE curriculum consists of 10 lessons designed to be taught in 40-45 minute segments. The lessons include a variety of teaching modalities aimed at encouraging student participation such as group work, role-plays, pair discussion, and games. Gang Resistance Education And Training (G.R.E.A.T.) is a gang and violence prevention program built around school-based, law enforcement officer-instructed classroom curricula. The program is intended as an immunization against delinquency, youth violence, and gang membership for children in the years immediately before the prime ages for introduction into gangs and delinquent behavior. Partnerships encourage positive relationships among the community, parents, schools and law enforcement officers.

Independence STEP

STEP stands for "Students Transitioning Exceptionally Prepared." The program focuses on helping students transition from the fifth grade to middle school, then from middle school to high school. Focuses of the program include the negative affects of bullying and cyber-bullying, conflict resolution, preventing drug, alcohol and youth smoking/vaping use.

Jackson County Sheriff's Jr. Deputy Academy

It is the mission of the Jackson County Sheriff's Office's Junior Deputy Academy to teach 7th and 8th graders the dangers that they may face in response to the current vaping epidemic, one of the most serious adolescent public-health crisis the country has faced in the last decade. The Sherriff's Office's goal is to slow down and eventually stop the teen vaping epidemic and to prevent young children from starting to use flavored e-cigarettes including such products as JUUL, Blu and other style Vape pens.

Kansas City Youth Programs Section

The purpose of the KCPD Youth Programs Section is to provide education and mentoring to youth ages 8-18 by administering structured curriculums in the schools to prevent drug use, bullying, violence and suicide in a fun and engaging format, while providing resources for youth-oriented programs and services offered in the community. KCPD Youth Programs Section goal is to teach as many youth as possible the skills needed to avoid involvement in violence, drugs and delinquent behavior by enhancing and updating lessons to fit the youth in Kansas City, while conforming to the needs of our school teachers and administration.

Lee's Summit DARE

The LSPD D.A.R.E unit instructs the 7th grade curriculum at the three middle schools within Lee’s Summit. The middle school lessons incorporate the D.A.R.E “Keeping it Real” curriculum, which reinforces the lessons learned in the 6th grade Core sessions and help to further promote good decision making and living a violence- and drug-free life. The total number of students instructed by LSPD D.A.R.E officers exceeds 6,000 student contacts per school year. D.A.R.E officers counsel students at the request of school administration, are trusted advisors in regard to safety concerns at the schools, and handle police matters and calls for service when they are on site.

Oak Grove DARE

The DARE curriculum consists of 10 lessons designed to be taught in 40-45 minute segments. The lessons include a variety of teaching modalities aimed at encouraging student participation such as group work, role-plays, pair discussion and games. The lessons are designed to promote interaction among the students as well as between the students and the teacher, so that the students are involved in their own learning. In addition to the core DARE curriculum, the Oak Grove program inclues "The Truth About Drugs" lessons.

Sugar Creek DARE/Community Violence Prevention

The Sugar Creek Community Violence Prevention Police Officer is an all encompassing role model and teacher for a majority of youth programs specifically applied to students in the two elementary schools in Sugar Creek. This encompasses the youth who live in Sugar Creek and Independence. The programs emphasize outreach to boys and girls between the ages of 6-13.
