These vacant sites often become hotspots for illegal activities, including vagrancy, drug use, prostitution, vandalism, and arson.

In 2023 alone, Kansas City recorded 185 homicides, with 84% of these occurring within a concentrated 34-square-mile area of the urban core. This area also has one of the highest densities of vacant properties in the city.
