Kansas City Public Schools

Program Summary:
Kansas City Public Schools is partnering with the Kansas City Police Department’s Gang Intelligence Squad, the Mattie Rhodes Center and the Center for Conflict Resolution to offer the Defying the Odds program in the Northeast neighborhood. The program’s focus will be on more than 350 students identified as being 100 times more likely—than the average American—to have their lives be touched by violence.

Each of these students will be placed in a one-to-one mentoring program, and all the students in the Northeast schools will be involved in activities to help mitigate the risks of them being the victim or perpetrator of violence. The training will also be made available to parents and the surrounding neighborhood.
