Transforming Reentry: Going Home For Good

Transformative Reentry: Going Home for Good (TR) is a reentry-focused program that bridges gaps in transitions from incarceration to community supervision to release.

TR has two main components. The first involves creating an atmosphere of restoration within the facility.

In 2021 the Center for Conflict Resolution (CCR) partnered with the Missouri Department of Corrections (MO DOC) to create a Restorative Reentry Community (RRC) at the Transition Center of Kansas City (TCKC). The RRC is a community-focused transition management model rooted in restorative justice philosophy and based on the principle of human dignity. The RRC model is derived from evidence-based practices established within prison systems in Germany, Norway and Sweden, and several programs that replicate those practices in a handful of US prisons.

The purpose of the RRC is to create a supportive community of reentry resources for residents on the inside, instead of waiting until release to access them

The RRC is also focused on dismantling the "us-versus-them" mentality found in most carceral settings and replace it with a collaborative environment where staff and residents work together to meet each resident's unique reentry needs. The collaboration produces a safer work environment for staff who model prosocial behaviors for residents.

The second component involves teaching conflict resolution and anger management skills to people on probation and parole. Through a series of weekly classes, participants share real-life examples and learn techniques for dealing with anger and conflict without violence.

Graduates of TCKC also are supported by a Citizen Circle—individuals from a church, neighborhood association, business or community organization who meet with the returning citizen periodically to provide help and support and ensure their reentry is successful.

Going Home for Good is a model that is Transforming Reentry.
