Northeast Take Back and Clean Up

There was a tremendous turnout for the Lykins Neighborhood Clean Up and Prescription Drug Take Back. 

Jackson County COMBAT and County Executive Frank White, Jr. welcomed neighbors, volunteers and The Kansas City Police Department out to the park for the third neighborhood cleanup and prescription drug take back of the year.

The County Executive said, “This is your neighborhood. It is your responsibility as a neighbor, to be good neighbors, and this is where COMBAT comes in to help you with that process.”

Sergeant Cory LeMoine with the Kansas City Police Department added, “We need the community out there to help us, because we can’t do it alone. It’s their community, we’re just a part of it, and so we all have to work together.”  

Jackson County Sheriff Mike Sharp and his deputies were also on site with the ‘Drug Terminator’ incinerator, collecting unused and expired medications from the neighborhood. 
Sheriff Sharp said, “By going around and picking up things and getting the streets cleaned up, that betters this community.”

With the help of more than 80 volunteers, COMBAT was able to clean up a large portion of the neighborhood. Dumpsters were kindly donated by City of Kansas City, Missouri to pick up bulky items such as mattresses, appliances and tires. 

Volunteers canvassed the neighborhood with COMBAT door hangers, providing information about COMBAT and the many programs and resources they fund.

All of the volunteers enjoyed hotdogs cooked by Taking It To The Streets, a disaster relief and community outreach organization.

Numerous COMBAT agencies volunteered their time to help with this event. A large majority of COMBAT funding goes to prevention and treatment programs serving Jackson County citizens in the urban core.  Among them were Amethyst Place, Benilde Hall, Comprehensive Mental Health Services, First Call, Healing House, Hope House, Imani House, Jackson County Family Court, KC Crime Commission, Metropolitan Organization to Counter Sexual Assault (MOCSA), reStart, Rose Brooks, Truman Medical Centers, Twelfth Street Heritage, United Inner City Services, and Urban Summit. 

With school being out for the summer, a big turnout of youth was able to volunteer for the event. Operation: Breakthrough, Urban Rangers, Della Lamb and the Jackson County Prosecutor’s Office were on site with young workers ready to get their hands dirty.
